New All-Black Play

Classic Cat. After the National Theatre’s Death and the King’s Horseman with black actors “whitening up” to play typical British colonials, Mandrake hears that the Novello Theatre is to stage an all-black Cat On A Hot Tin Roof in November.

Sanaa Lathan will be Maggie, played by Elizabeth Taylor in the film version, and James Earl Jones will be Big Daddy. The role of Brick Pollitt, played by Paul “Blue Eyes” Newman, will be performed by Adrian Lester. There is no word about the colour of the servants in the plantation owner’s house. But a white actor who has appeared at the National moaned in April: “Not only can we not play black characters, now we’re not even allowed to play whites.”
